What does a PFAS zone mean for a building project?
In a PFAS zone, soil movement requires precautions: you cannot simply reuse excavated soil elsewhere, and anyone building must allow for soil analyses. The zones and the measures are published by OVAM (the Public Waste Agency of Flanders) and the Databank Ondergrond Vlaanderen (DOV).
Where the zones are
Around companies and sites where PFAS was used or discharged, such as the zone around the 3M site in Zwijndrecht near Antwerp. A zone can grow or shrink as more measurements are taken.
What the Perceelscan shows
Whether the plot lies in a PFAS zone, and which one. That is a potential obstacle, not a ban: a cost and a delay to factor in.
